This course is designed for educators who work with students who have been long-term English learners, with at least five to six years of English instruction in an English medium school. Often called experienced multilinguals, these students may have proficient speaking and listening skills, but still struggle with academic language and understanding complex texts.

In this course, participants will learn how to engineer summatives, scaffold for comprehensible input and output, and develop effective lesson planning approaches to support experienced multilinguals. Participants will explore various strategies to help students transition from social language to academic language, understand and analyze complex texts, and communicate effectively for academic purposes.

The course will also include personal stories and experiences of the instructor, Tan Huynh, who has worked as an English language development specialist and taught social studies, science, art, music, and drama to help participants understand how to apply the strategies in different teaching contexts.

By the end of the course, participants will have a better understanding of how to support experienced multilinguals and help them achieve long-term success in their academic and personal lives.
