As you explore the three modules, you’ll reflect on the power of daily teacher read alouds to develop a community of learners and boost students’ vocabulary and listening capacity.  The list of ten ways your daily read alouds become teaching tools includes enlarging background knowledge, understanding how diverse genres work, using context clues to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words, developing an understanding of literary elements such as protagonist and theme as well as questioning techniques for discussing texts.  

Explore several resources that support students’ reading such as using Blooms Taxonomy to move from right there text questions to high level thinking such as synthesizing and analyzing and a chart of before, during, and after reading strategies.  Reflect on how to use a teacher’s notebook to model responses to reading for students and establish expectations for their writing about reading.  

In module 3, you’ll observe how you can use one text as a teaching tool for multiple purposes. By studying the think-alouds embedded in a short fairy tale, “The King and the Shirt” by Leo Tolstoy, you’ll be able to develop similar lessons for your students.   Each module contains the research that supports specific teaching ideas and closes with a video by Laura Robb and Evan Robb. You’ll also read a section called “Reflect and Connect” that invites you to try a strategy and then discuss your experiences with colleagues and students. The estimated amount of time to complete Read Alouds: Multiple Teaching Opportunities is about 2 hours.  How you move through the content of a course is your choice: you can complete a few modules and pause or pause after each module. The point is to develop a plan that works for your style of learning and try to reserve time to reflect, pose questions, and reread parts to clarify your understandings.
