We work with key tools used in SWI including the matrix, word sums, grapheme-phoneme diagrams, etymologial references and flow charts of the suffixing conventions. 

We also study key practices of SWI in conjunction with those tools. We work with the "4 questions of SWI" to see how they guide scienfific inquiry of spelling. We practice the conventions of "spelling-out-orthography " which provies a means of constant practice with orthographic structures (graphemes, morphemes and orthographic markers) for both teachers and students. 

The first session introduces these tools and practices with the help of the first lessons in my teacher resource book "Teaching How The Written Word Works ". I model how we can use study of any subject area to set up SWI investigations using the lessons in that book. This first session sets the groundwork for the next two that teach participants how to work with Etymonline  and how to construct matrices. We also work with grapheme-phoneme charts, morphological word webs and flow charts for the sufficing conventions. 

Novices can take this course to see how these tools provide a rich introduction to how English spelling words and how we can teach it. Experts in SWI gain a deeper understanding of details of how we can use these tools to deepen their understanding and add precision to our instructional practice.
