Joe Tchen

Joseph Tchen is a dedicated educator and facilitator with a lifelong passion for advancing Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in schools. With dual degrees in English and Linguistics from the University of Florida and a Master’s in Teaching from the University of Central Florida, Joseph's journey began in the classroom, where his innovative teaching methods earned him the "Rookie of the Year" award and a perfect evaluation score in Florida. For over a decade, Joseph taught Language Arts, Technology, and Drama at Seattle Country Day School, where he played a key role in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts as co-chair of the DEI committee. He was also instrumental in organizing national and local conferences focused on equity in education, including the 2019 People of Color Conference in Seattle. Joseph’s passion for SEL was reignited in 2014 when he attended a Summer Institute by The Institute for Social and Emotional Learning (IFSEL). Since then, he has transitioned from participant to Program Manager at IFSEL, where he facilitates professional development and collaborates with schools to help them achieve their SEL goals. His work focuses on fostering environments where students and educators can thrive both emotionally and academically. Outside of his professional life, Joseph enjoys bouldering, traveling, playing board games, and staying connected with his queer community. He believes deeply in the power of SEL to transform both personal and professional lives, fostering growth, connection, and a sense of belonging.
